Trauma Stress Management and Defusing
Who should attend?
This course is designed for managers, supervisors and team leaders responsible for employees in roles assessed to be vulnerable to traumatic stress. It should be used on induction to the role and will form one of the control measures for the risk assessment of both the manager’s role and that of their supervisees.
Aims of the course
The aim of this course is to ensure that managers have the skills to be able to identify and support employees experiencing traumatic stress reactions. It also aims to clarify the role of the manager during a post-trauma period. Through the manager’s intervention, the course aims to ensure that the appropriate level of support is made available to employees involved in traumatic incidents
Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will:
- Be able to recognise a potentially traumatic event
- Understand the physical, psychological and social effects of trauma
- Be able to differentiate between normal and abnormal reactions to trauma, including chronic conditions
- Be aware of the organisation’s policies and procedures for trauma support
- Be aware of the risk and control measures for their role and the role of the staff that they are responsible for
- Be aware of the different types of intervention designed to manage traumatic stress and understand their rationale and use
- Understand the model for defusing following a traumatic event
- Have practiced a defusing intervention with an individual
- Have practiced a defusing intervention with a group
- Be able to develop a range of simple coping skills that have been shown to reduce the impact of common reactions to traumatic stress
- Be aware of where to get further advice and support
