Suicide and Crisis Management for Professionals
Aim of the course
The course aims to provide participants with a framework for suicide risk assessment and for a structured crisis intervention. The course gives participants the opportunity to practice brief suicide counselling.
Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will:
- Have explored myths, taboos and their own preconceptions of suicide
- Have a better understanding of the factors that contribute towards suicidal behaviour
- Be able to recognise and respond to an expression of suicide
- Understand a “flagging” system for rating the risk
- Recognise the necessary skills for brief suicide counselling
- Have practiced interrupting the suicide process
- Be aware of the various sources of advice and support for appropriate referral
- Understand the effects of working with highly emotional clients
- Have considered their own support and self-care
