Suicide and Crisis Management for Professionals

Aim of the course

The course aims to provide participants with a framework for suicide risk assessment and for a structured crisis intervention. The course gives participants the opportunity to practice brief suicide counselling.

Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will:

  • Have explored myths, taboos and their own preconceptions of suicide
  • Have a better understanding of the factors that contribute towards suicidal behaviour
  • Be able to recognise and respond to an expression of suicide
  • Understand a “flagging” system for rating the risk
  • Recognise the necessary skills for brief suicide counselling
  • Have practiced interrupting the suicide process
  • Be aware of the various sources of advice and support for appropriate referral
  • Understand the effects of working with highly emotional clients
  • Have considered their own support and self-care
